CALL TO AN UNASSEMBLED CAUCUS

 April 21, 2008

 

 

The Westmoreland Democratic Committee announces that it will hold a county-wide unassembled  Caucus between  7:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Monday April 21, 2008 at the AT. Johnson Building for the purposes of electing 4 Delegates and 2 Alternates (1 Clinton and 3 Obama Delegates & 1 Clinton and 1 Obama Alternate)  to the 1st Congressional District Democratic Convention to be held in Williamsburg May 17, 2008 and the 2008 Virginia State Convention, to be held in Hampton Roads June 14, 2008.. Those receiving the most votes will win. You may only vote for no more than six candidates. A tie will be broken by drawing from a deck of regular playing cards.  Proof of residency will be required.  

 

Pre-filing - Any person wishing to place their names on the ballot as a delegate must file with Diane Waltrip,232 Matthews Cove Drive, Montross Virginia, 493.1206 or   Peggy Garland at Smith & Garland Law Firm 15381 Kingshighway, Montross VA. no later than 5 p.m. Monday April 16th 2008. 

 

Any registered voter in Westmorland County may participate in the caucus. There is no charge for those wishing to attend and vote at the caucus. All participants will be required to sign a standardized Caucus Participation Form stating that he or she is a Democrat, does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a democratic nominee in the ensuing general election, believes in the principles of the Democratic Party, and is a registered voter in Westmoreland County.  Caucus participation forms must be completed prior to voting. If less than the number of allocated delegates pre-file, the Caucus shall be cancelled.   

 

 Voluntary Administrative Fee: There shall be a voluntary administrative fee of  fifteen dollars ($15.00) for each person filing for delegate, payable to the Westmoreland Democratic Committee. Payment of this fee is completely voluntary. No statement is required in order to waive payment.

 

Notice Requirements: The Westmoreland Democratic Committee will  published the time, date and location of the Caucus at least 7 days prior to the Caucus, but not more than 2 weeks before the Caucus.

 

Rules of the  Caucus: The doors to the Caucus will be opened at 6:30 p.m for check in, doors will close at 8:00 p.m. Those in line at 8:00 p.m.will be permitted to complete the check-in process and will be permitted to vote. Only four delegates and two alternates will be elected.  Highest vote receivers will win the allocated slots.

Westmoreland Democratic Committee will take all feasible steps to encourage broad participation in the delegate selection process. Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, age, color, national origin, religion, ethnic identity or economic status in the delegate selection process is prohibited. The Westmoreland Democratic Committee will make every effort to ensure that the Westmoreland Democratic delegation is half-male and half-female.
